How’s that for alliteration? So, it’s October. That means the leaves are changing. The weather is getting cooler. And I’m sitting next to a 5.6 pound bag of candy I bought at Costco “for the trick-or-treaters.” (I may or may not have an Almond Joy in my mouth as I type this.)

Well, I love October. For all of the above reasons, but mostly because it marks the beginning the season where you can basically wrap yourself in a blanket and call it fashion. Not only are poncho/capelet/Snuggies/wraps comfortable, they also look pretty hip. AND they’re fun to knit! (Two cheers for patters with no sleeve seams!)

I’m really excited to knit a comfy little cloak for the winter. And there are a ton of poncho and capelet patterns on Ravelry. But I’ve had a hard time finding many that don’t have that flower-power-craft-project sort of look. I don’t think it’s too much to ask that whatever I knit shouldn’t make me look like I’m a third grader’s art project. So with that high standard in mind, here are my favorite poncho/capelet patterns I’ve found on the interwebs:

2. Rosa’s Caponcho
3. Patons Cable Capelet
4. Cranberry Capelet
(In case you’re interested in knitting along, 1-3 are free patterns. 4 costs $6.)

I’m leaning towards number 3 because it’s classic and will be pretty speedy to whip up. Plus, doesn’t it just look like a big warm yarn hug?

What do you think? Got any favorites? Cast your votes before I cast on this week!

Really tough choice, but I think I like #3. I found an incredible pattern in a magazine recently, I’ll see if I can find it and I’ll send it to you. Happy Knitting!

  2. Jamie says:

#1 looks a little “baby bat” like. like a baby bat whose wings aren’t quiiite fully developed yet and maybe need a little clipping….like mich’s tounge. i really love #4 (and her boots!) because to me, its a little more relaxed looking than #3. but i do agree. the yarn hug looks great. that twisty thing on the bottom is fun too. xo

Haha. You’re so right about the baby bat. Maybe that’s not such a good thing. Doesn’t sound very cozy.

  3. Frankie says:

I like # 2 and #4 the best. I don’t like that #1 has sleeves, nor do I like the balls on the front. I really like the simplicity of number 2. And #4 looks like something directly out of a store. I love the braid at the bottom of #3 but I can see that it might sit weird. :) This will be a really fun project for you to do! I wish I was more advanced in my knitting skills. I think first, I need to master hats/ blankets.

  4. Jenny S says:

I agree with you! #3 is definitely my favorite, hands down! I love the neck on it (I am wearing a sweater with that warm comfy-type neck right now!) and the length will be flattering with the right pair of jeans/slacks.

  5. Michelle says:

I like number 2 (mostly cuz it’s called a caponcho, what a good name!). And I also like number 3. The braided thing at the bottom is cool and it would be really cozy. Number 1 is out for me – not a fan of the half sleeve thing.

NUMBER 4 is GORGEOUS! :) which one did you end up making?

  10. LAlcorn says:

All are cute. But have you worn a shawl before? They are pretty useless when you raise your arms or if you are holding a baby they end up around your kneck. At least that has been my experience. Maybe you have some tricks for me.

      Hey Lisa,

Yeah, I agree, ponchos can be a little impractical for anything other than sitting in a movie theater. Problem is, they’re just so darn cute. I ended up making number 3 and I really love it. I can still carry a purse with it and it’s fit over my prego belly nicely. Now holding a baby while wearing it, that’s a different story…
